“The multitude of resources that were provided are outstanding. The additional readings were beneficial in understanding the science behind the reading instruction. As I am new to teaching Kindergarten, I was concerned about teaching first-time readers and writers. This course has provided me with instructional strategies and ideas that have assured me I have the tools to teach these early learners.“

FAQs
How many people do you need to run a facilitated course?
For the facilitated groups we ask for a minimum of 8 participants, however we can run them with less participants. If you have a group of educators who are interested in joining you, we put together your very own Facilitated Science of Reading Course with an instructor and schedule times to meet the needs of your group.
You can also sign up for our Facilitated Course for January-June 2023 here.
Do you accept international teachers?
Yes, we do accept international teachers for our course. The course does have an Ontario focus but the science and resources can be used for English reading and writing development anywhere in the world.
What grade is the Science of Reading course geared towards?
While the course is geared towards Kindergarten – Grade 3, it is useful for educators up to Grade 8. Understanding the building blocks of reading, assessment and instructional resources for these foundational skills and reading and writing interventions, can be applied across all grades.
I am looking for some more information about the classroom connections portion of the online course. Are all the connections similar to the demo module or do they get more specific in practical classroom implementation?
As the course progresses, there are many specific practical classroom connections provided.
These include a list of activities and assessments that can be implemented in the classroom to target different reading and writing skills. We have organized this in a way that is simplified for the educator, explaining the target skill, the implementation strategy, grouping recommendations and activity duration. For assessments, we have also compiled a list of different assessment tools that can be implemented in the classroom by the teacher, that complement the activities and targeted skills discussed. In later modules we also discuss how to transition your classroom to align with the Science of Reading all while utilizing resources you may already have. For example, we show the connection between DIBELS scores, PM Benchmarks, DRA, Fountas & Pinnell and others to help guide teachers through student grouping and instructional decisions.
Our goal is to provide all educators who take this course with practical skills, tips, tricks, activities and assessments that they can implement in the classroom immediately. For those taking the facilitated course, live meetings with our course instructors will also take place where these conversations can delve deeper.
How long does the course take to complete?
On average each module takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. Some teachers take longer as they explore the additional readings and resources. The asynchronous option is self paced so you can spend as long as you need on it within your 1 year of access.
Is there a time limit to complete the course?
You will have 1 full year to complete the course and access the content.
Would this be a good course that would teach me how to assess the specific needs of individual children as well as choose and teach the material to meet their needs?
The course is geared towards classroom teachers, and includes discussion of small group and individual needs. The foundational understanding of the science is paired with assessments, activities, further reading and additional resources. Most of the assessments are done at the individual level, and specific activities to target areas of need can individually, as a small group or with a whole class.
Can I get reimbursed by my school or school board for the course?
Each school and board have different parameters for what they will reimburse. However, we provide you with a purchase receipt and a certificate of completion that you can submit to your school if they reimburse for a teacher’s individual learning expenses.
Can I get credits for taking your course?
A report from Deloitte (2020) shows that investing in children’s literacy is a key dimension of building a stronger and more equitable Canada for tomorrow. One million Canadian children under the age of 15 are estimated to have below-grade-level literacy skills. 27 percent of kids start Grade 1 without some of the early developmental skills they need to learn to read.
